The Faubourg Treme

Ah, the Treme, my neighborhood. Just saw this as a bulletin on MySpace, I’ll just copy/paste here in case you might be interested:

The Faubourg Treme is one of the most historically significant neighborhoods in New Orleans, and learning more about it gives you a new appreciation for the city you love. I’m assuming that you aren’t rushing out to dig through history books, but may I highly suggest the following:

Faubourg Treme; The Untold Story of Black New Orleans
a feature length documentary
Co-Written by Lolis Eric Elie (writer for the Times Picayune)
Co-Written and Directed by Dawn Logsdon (Editor of the Academy Award nominated documentary, The Weather Underground (and a zillion other awesome docs))
Produced by Wynton Marsalis (I assume you know him)

I’ve seen this movie a few times, and it’s pretty amazing. It was one of those moments where you realize how little you actually know about the block you live on. And there’s also this guy at the New Orleans Tribune who said it was “arguably the most poignant film ever made about New Orleans.” So, there’s that.

Since the Saturday night showing is a mere two or so blocks from my house, I reckon I might just limp down there. Besides, there’s free gumbo. Free, you bastards! Freeeeeeeeeee!!!
